Our training academy (dojo) has been in continuous existence for over 43 years. Its roots go back to 1956 Okinawa and 1960’s America, when the earliest pioneers planted the first seeds of Karate in the continental United States. Ultimately, our goal is to preserve and promote the traditions of Okinawa through the teaching of Isshin-Ryu karate.
Hershey Karate is a private academy (not taxpayer or corporate supported or funded) which provides instruction in Okinawa Isshin-Ryu karate and Kobudo for adults and youth 13 years of age or older. Preteens 11 & 12 years of age are permitted in the class only when accompanied by a parent who is an active participant in the class.
We are located 1 ½ mile East of the Hershey town square at 1132 East Chocolate Avenue (US-422). Membership dues are paid quarterly and are never more than $45 per month per person. The cost may be less depending on the payment plan selected and/or family discounts. There are no contract requirements, or any other hidden fees.
There are five aspects of modern karate that are currently taught in dojos. Karate is:
At Hershey Karate, emphasis is placed on the first three types, which is referred to as traditional karate.
Currently, the majority of karate training facilities heavily emphasize sport karate. While sport Karate has provided many people with the benefits of physical toning and strength, it leaves many of the character building and stress relieving traits behind. The atmosphere is oriented around competition, rather than the traditional essence of karate. Okinawan masters believed that Karate was much too dangerous to be conducted in a sport setting. We agree with the masters, and for over thirty two years have strived to practice and preserve the original essence of the traditional Karate perfected many centuries ago.
Our classes are operated in a relaxed manner with an emphasis on mutual respect, safety, and enjoying the process of learning an authentic martial art. We do not participate in tournaments or other competitive events, and in general we do not spar. Our training environment is non-competitive, with each member working not only to improve personally, but to help the other members improve as well. What we teach is not a sport, but a method of fusing the mind and body together to better ourselves in daily life, and to achieve peace of mind.
Your Isshin-Ryu training program will include the most up-to-date methods known for achieving total fitness and self defense capabilities within a well-organized, progressive, non-competitive format. You’ll begin your classes as a “novice” with others just like you. You don’t need to be “in shape” or know anything about the martial arts to get started; your instructor will guide you, class by class, through sets of karate movements designed to enhance body tone and provide self-defense skills. At first, these will be very simple and easy to learn. As you progress and your abilities develop, you’ll learn more advanced skills. You’ll feel yourself gaining speed, stamina, agility – and confidence.
For normal progress, you should attend six (6) lessons during a month. We understand that time management is a challenge for most people, and our class attendance expectations are balanced accordingly. We believe strongly that participation in karate should enhance a person’s life, with training often serving as a therapeutic, stress relieving event, as opposed to just another burden in an already hectic daily schedule. The two classes offered per week are structured. Every week, new information and instruction is presented, along with both group and two-person practice of the newly learned techniques.
Classes meet on Monday and Thursday evenings:

… presents one of the highlights of the Isshin-Ryu system. Nearly forty percent of lsshin-Ryu students are girls and women, and for good reason. Any ideas of karate being an unfeminine, male only activity simply do not apply with Isshin-Ryu Karate. The Isshin-Ryu system provides a way for today’s women to gain important personal security and confidence in a decidedly graceful and invigorating way. Rather than muscle-building, movements are form-flattering, and provide a weight-control program far more interesting than most of the “do-It-over” exercise routines. An ideal way to shed unwanted pounds and inches – and provide a healthy break from the routines of home, school, or office. You’ll be helping yourself look and feel your best, and all the while gaining the self-defense capabilities so important to the woman of today. A karate system with a woman’s needs truly in mind!

You’ll leave intimidation behind and gain the ability to defend yourself and the family that is so important to any man at any age. Stand tall with lsshin-Ryu Karate. Friends, family and fellow workers will notice. It’s a great feeling!
…provides a health “club” atmosphere that gives an alternative to the sometimes undesirable peer pressures placed on today’s youth. They meet other positive-thinking young people in their karate classes and they learn, through regular attendance, the benefits of self-discipline and productive goal-setting – not to mention the fitness and stress management capabilities that will help prepare them for approaching adulthood and the pressures of college or work. A great way to help bridge the difficult gap between childhood and maturity!
